Platelet Rich Plasma
This process involves the patient’s blood being drawn and placed into a special centrifuge that separates out the platelet rich plasma (PRP) which contains tissue growth factors. The platelet rich plasma is injected into the joint, tendon or ligament needing treatment. This works by the same principles that traditional prolotherapy works, however, there are several advantages.
- The body does not have to recruit the healing cells to the area as they are injected there.
- It is difficult to get the healing cells inside the joint with traditional prolotherapy.
- As we age, we have less circulating stem cells and growth factors. This helps concentrate them into the area of need.
Studies have shown that PRP can modulate action on articular cartilage lubrication and regeneration.
There tends to be a little more discomfort post injection, compared to traditional prolotherapy. There is more of an inflammatory response.
Dr. Born has been doing PRP injections since 2012.
Biocellular Stem Cell
Bio cellular prolotherapy uses adult STEM cells obtained from the mesenchymal or stromal cells of adipose tissue of each patient. These mesenchymal cells are partially differentiated cells capable of continuing down the lineage to ligament, tendon, and cartilage cells. They also change the tissue and joint micro-environment more favorably toward healing. Adipose tissue contains 200-500 times more mesenchymal stem cells as bone marrow. Adipose tissue retains its regenerative abilities longer as a person ages than bone marrow. Adipose tissue is easier to harvest. Bio cellular prolotherapy is desirable when more aggressive healing processes are needed.
Dr. Born has been doing bio cellular therapy since 2013.
